Thank you for coming to our Open House!

Join our 4-year Anniversary Prize Raffle

Thank you to everyone that came to our Open House! It was such a special honour to welcome all our friends, clients, and well wishers and give them a preview of all we can offer. It was lovely to see our regular workplace transformed into a fair of sorts, and how delightful it was to see new smiles and hear new laughs in the old Lopez shop!

We especially loved giving live demonstrations of our branding capabilities, and we were overjoyed to give out these samples fresh off the branding table! We appreciated the many questions and ideas guests shared, and we felt so privileged to share our process on the newly unveiled spiral staircase and apprenticeship program.

As my family often shares, Mabuhay is Tagalog for ‘Long life!’ and it's a common greeting in the Philippines. There was certainly lots of life shared! With friends like ours, there’s a lot to live long for.

After the open house we had a precious celebration with our staff and their guests, it featured live music from our musician staff members, and some legendary games of chess occurred too. I’m happy to announce that our dear Carlos Garza remains undefeated, despite my many attempts.

I hope all who attended enjoyed the work of our friends at Hotdog Hustlin’. We trust some delicious Filipino inspired bites and aromas were shared, and we’re certain to have the Hustlin’ team back again!

Speaking off, we would like to retroactively invite you to our future Open Houses this summer! We’re hoping to host these on a weekly basis and invite a featured artisan to our craft night markets. There will also catering from our dear friends at Hotdog Hustlin’ and various well curated diversions and entertainment.

As you may recall, there was a raffle for live edge tables and other prizes at check-in, although we understand not all members were able to check in and thought we would extend the offer to all who would like to join the raffle at this time. To join, kindly fill out the google form here.

Thank you so much for your time. We deeply appreciate your support of our friendly neighbourhood woodshop! We're always glad to be of service, and behalf of our team, a very happy summer!

Our Triple Crown Philosophy

Some years ago, I innately understood that a building structure should have three important attributes. First, it should be structurally sound. Second, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Third, it should be attainable or affordable. Ever since, I have strived to make everything I do worthy of this triple crown of excellence.

During a ferry ride to Vancouver, I saw my young son had drawn Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man in my notebook. To my surprise, my son’s sketch led me to discover the historic importance of this idea. This world-famous sketch of a man in a circle, his arms outstretched in two different overlapping poses, has become iconic. A Wikipedia search showed me how Da Vinci was inspired by proportions described by Vitruvius in his ancient treatise of De Architectura.

Vitruvius was arguably the greatest architect in history. His work is the only major surviving publication on architecture from classical antiquity. It was written for Emperor Augustus, made famous in the Bible for his census which brought Jesus’ parents to Bethlehem. Eminent Roman architects such as Vitruvius were skilled in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. As an army engineer himself, Vitruvius had overseen all manner of building and construction for wars and settlements across Europe and North Africa.

The most famous maxim of Vitruvius was that architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas. In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions. (Just imagine what Venus, the goddess of love, might look like.)

I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gives me more motivation than ever to offer you the product of a triple crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.
