Fundraiser for the South Island Angels

What do Filipinos, Basketball, and Live Edge Tables have in common?

Mabuhay! Some of you might know my father is originally from the Philippines, from a small town called Santo Angel Sul, which means Saint Angels of the South Island. I connect a lot with my community through the Bayanihan Community Centre, and the Ignite Congregation at Coastline Church. I’ve known pastor Nilo since he first arrived in Canada and his sermons have brought a lot of wisdom into my daily life.

Some of you might also know I’m an avid member of the Basketball scene here in Victoria, and there is some overlap between the two communities! It was on the court that I met a true pillar of both communities as well.

I’d like to introduce you to Danreb Domingo, or Mister Sunday as we call him around the shop! Dan has been a close friend since he came to Canada from Pangasinan 16 years ago. He’s been a galvanizing force in our community, beloved by the youth and elderly alike. I see Dan as running an informal ministry. He’s known to spend time with and support members of our community, especially those who are newly arrived from the Philippines and are struggling with finding friends, guidance, and support.

Dan’s inspired words and counsel have often touched me deeply, and I can feel we are both after one heart. I think this is a sentiment a lot of my Pinoy friends feel about Dan, as well as on the Lopez crew. Dan is often here later in the day, if not to work, but only to help out. People on team loudly cheer “Mister Sunday!” as he walks in. He’s a real galvanizer, morale booster, and valuable team player for so many.

Basketball is something Dan is always encouraging us to get into. It’s a clean, healthy, and wholesome activity for the youth and us oldies as well! If it weren’t for Dan snapping me out of my overtime hyperfocus episodes, I’d spend all my time in the shop! Instead, I get to create beautiful memories with my family and on the court.

Dan is also a pillar in the basketball community. “When I came to Canada, my friends on the court taught me sportsmanship” Dan shared, “When I didn’t want to play basketball, they taught me to just keep on going until I win. Life’s like that as well.”

After 16 long years, Dan is going back to the Philippines to reconnect with himself and his family. But before he leaves, he wants to return some of the love he’s found at both the Filipino and Basketball Victoria communities “It’s really hard to leave all my people and the memories here, but I want to raise my community up before I go. I want to leave a happy legacy for all the respect and support I got.” Dan told me.

We want to do something for Dan too. It’s always been a dream for Dan to play in the Filipino Victoria Basketball League 2024 with a dream team of his circle. The league happens every year, and it’s been a huge staple of Victoria’s culture for the past 13 years. This year, the entrance fee is $2,750, and we’re looking to fundraise for Dan’s own team, the South Island Angels! Named after both the South Vancouver Island, as well as the South Island in the Philippines we are from, it’s looking to be a show stopper of a team!

We are looking for community members, especially business owners, who would be interested in contributing in one of four ways:
• Direct donations: Businesses that are able to directly contribute towards sponsoring the team will have their logo on the Jersey of the South Island Angels.
• Participation in our fundraiser: We are hosting a fundraiser 11am-4pm on Saturday March 2nd in our workshop premises. We are looking to host 3-5 businesses, including our own, to sell all or a selection of their products, with 20% of proceeds going to the South Island Angels fund.
• Raffle: At our fundraiser we will be hosting amenities and raffling off an artisanal handmade table, with all proceeds going towards the team.
• Volunteers: We are looking for 2-5 volunteers to assist with setting up the fundraiser and getting the word out.

If you know Dan, you might know that he is an MVP among us, both on and off the court. We’d be so glad if you help us bid goodbye to him with the Victoria send-off he deserves. We believe this collective gesture from us working together will leave a happy legacy, both as a FVBL season, but also in our community memory. Please do get in touch with me if you are interested in joining, Dan and I would be thrilled to hear from you!

Kind regards,

Our Triple Crown Philosophy

Some years ago, I innately understood that a building structure should have three important attributes. First, it should be structurally sound. Second, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Third, it should be attainable or affordable. Ever since, I have strived to make everything I do worthy of this triple crown of excellence.

During a ferry ride to Vancouver, I saw my young son had drawn Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man in my notebook. To my surprise, my son’s sketch led me to discover the historic importance of this idea. This world-famous sketch of a man in a circle, his arms outstretched in two different overlapping poses, has become iconic. A Wikipedia search showed me how Da Vinci was inspired by proportions described by Vitruvius in his ancient treatise of De Architectura.

Vitruvius was arguably the greatest architect in history. His work is the only major surviving publication on architecture from classical antiquity. It was written for Emperor Augustus, made famous in the Bible for his census which brought Jesus’ parents to Bethlehem. Eminent Roman architects such as Vitruvius were skilled in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. As an army engineer himself, Vitruvius had overseen all manner of building and construction for wars and settlements across Europe and North Africa.

The most famous maxim of Vitruvius was that architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas. In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions. (Just imagine what Venus, the goddess of love, might look like.)

I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gives me more motivation than ever to offer you the product of a triple crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.
