Fundraiser for Danreb Domingo: The South Island Angels team!

Filipino Food, Live Music, Hoops, Raffle, and more!

I would like to invite you to our Filipino Community Fundraiser! We are raising funds for Danreb Domingo, who is a pillar of our community, so that he can register his dream team, the South Island Angels into this year’s Filipino Victoria Basketball League before he departs back to the Philippines.

You may know Dan personally, and he might have even dropped off a poster for the event with you recently. We’d be so glad if you help us bid goodbye to him with the Victoria send-off he deserves. We believe this collective gesture from us working together will leave a happy legacy, both as a FVBL season, but also in our community memory. There's a few ways you can help!

Donate to the South Island Angels fund: You can donate directly to the South Island Angels here. We are especially looking for any businesses who would like to sponsor the South Island Angels for their logo to be included on the team Jersey.

Attend our fundraiser: We are hosting a fundraiser 11am-4pm on March 2nd at our curated and beautified workshop. We’ve been working hard to make the premise look absolutely stunning! There’s going to be local business vendors, delicious Filipino food, live music, hoops, games, a raffle and more! Proceeds from the fundraiser will be going directly to raising funds for the South Island Angels

Vend your business at our fundraiser: We still have spots for businesses who would like to sell their products at our fundraiser. Our vendors will be donating a percentage of proceeds towards the team fund. Please get in touch with us to learn more about this opportunity.

Participate in our raffle: We are raffling off one of our latest live-edge table projects! This high-end table is a wonderful synthesis of woodwork, concrete, fabrication, and spray finishing, and would usually sell for $600. Raffle tickets can be bought here or in person at our shop for $10. All proceeds from this raffle will be going to the team fund.

If you would like to volunteer, vend, or get a feel for the space, you are most welcome to come to our rehearsal with all volunteers and businesses at our workshop premise, 676-#3 Alpha St (Accessible through Tolmie Ln) this Saturday the 24th of February at 11am. Please do get in touch with me if you are interested in helping us with this event, Dan and I would be thrilled to hear from you!

Kind regards,

Our Triple Crown Philosophy

Some years ago, I innately understood that a building structure should have three important attributes. First, it should be structurally sound. Second, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Third, it should be attainable or affordable. Ever since, I have strived to make everything I do worthy of this triple crown of excellence.

During a ferry ride to Vancouver, I saw my young son had drawn Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man in my notebook. To my surprise, my son’s sketch led me to discover the historic importance of this idea. This world-famous sketch of a man in a circle, his arms outstretched in two different overlapping poses, has become iconic. A Wikipedia search showed me how Da Vinci was inspired by proportions described by Vitruvius in his ancient treatise of De Architectura.

Vitruvius was arguably the greatest architect in history. His work is the only major surviving publication on architecture from classical antiquity. It was written for Emperor Augustus, made famous in the Bible for his census which brought Jesus’ parents to Bethlehem. Eminent Roman architects such as Vitruvius were skilled in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. As an army engineer himself, Vitruvius had overseen all manner of building and construction for wars and settlements across Europe and North Africa.

The most famous maxim of Vitruvius was that architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas. In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions. (Just imagine what Venus, the goddess of love, might look like.)

I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gives me more motivation than ever to offer you the product of a triple crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.
