In the last few weeks, we’ve been so thrilled to host local artists Lucas Shawcross and Shaye Nielsen. Not only was the art they presented for exhibitions gorgeous, but we also had the opportunity to collaborate on some truly multi-disciplinary and bespoke pieces! These pieces, as well as other merchandise from past artists will also be on display and for sale for the coming Night Markets. Check out some of these pieces below!

We’ve also curated featured artists for the upcoming weeks, and we’re excited to have our fourth featured artist, Shandy Browett! Shandy is a Victoria based painter who creates truly stunning works of art. We will also have some members of the local band HOT POT playing a live set. It's looking to be a fantastic evening, and we hope to see you there!

Featured Artist for July 27th: Shandy Browett

Born and raised in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, and now based in Victoria, Shandy is a phenomenal artistic polymath, whose many mediums include sketch art, acrylic painting, murals, illustrations, stained glass, chalk art and beadwork. I’m sure you can see we are so thrilled to have her be our featured artist this Thursday the 27th!

Shandy grew up in a highly artistic household, her earliest influences being her mother, who was an illustrative artist, and her father, who practices pen art and fine art. Watching them do their work, Shandy’s strong passion for creation and building was fostered strongly and early.  Whilst in school Shandy eagerly immersed herself in every art class she could, and the skills she developed then have continued to be part of her life over the years till today.

Shandy’s upbringing also included a strong influence of music, another passion she inherited from her parents. She loves to play jazzy and soulful songs, and her repertoire include singing, saxophone, and piano. Partly for her penchant for the style, our friends from the local band HOT POT will be playing a jazzy soulful set! Shandy also writes her own songs, as well as poetry, short stories, and articles which have been published in local magazines. She truly embodies the creative spirit of a polymath, something we are just in awe of!

Recently, Shandy has been connecting with her indigenous heritage with beadwork, and she has created some gorgeous jewelry and other accessories she will be bringing down as part of her exhibition this Thursday. She also took part in the city of Victoria’s Art Battle Championship, where she thrived in speed painting, which has kindled a newfound joy for the process. Using her bold style with vibrant colors and outlines, Shandy bagged the championship spot!

Shandy’s winning piece was her iconic Rooster, a staple theme in her art. “They’re pretty cool and I love drawing them!” She chuckled.
On Thursday the 27th, Shandy is going to be bringing a number of prints, including her iconic rooster motifs, as well as some of her beadwork pieces. We’re most excited that she will be live sketching on a canvas through the evening! I’m sure the flavours of the night will endear something unique and catchy!

Thank you so much for your time, Friend. We deeply appreciate your support of our friendly neighbourhood one-stop workshop! We're always glad to be of service, and on behalf of our team we wish you a very happy summer!

Kind regards,

Our Triple Crown Philosophy

Some years ago, I innately understood that a building structure should have three important attributes. First, it should be structurally sound. Second, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Third, it should be attainable or affordable. Ever since, I have strived to make everything I do worthy of this triple crown of excellence.

During a ferry ride to Vancouver, I saw my young son had drawn Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man in my notebook. To my surprise, my son’s sketch led me to discover the historic importance of this idea. This world-famous sketch of a man in a circle, his arms outstretched in two different overlapping poses, has become iconic. A Wikipedia search showed me how Da Vinci was inspired by proportions described by Vitruvius in his ancient treatise of De Architectura.

Vitruvius was arguably the greatest architect in history. His work is the only major surviving publication on architecture from classical antiquity. It was written for Emperor Augustus, made famous in the Bible for his census which brought Jesus’ parents to Bethlehem. Eminent Roman architects such as Vitruvius were skilled in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. As an army engineer himself, Vitruvius had overseen all manner of building and construction for wars and settlements across Europe and North Africa.

The most famous maxim of Vitruvius was that architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas. In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions. (Just imagine what Venus, the goddess of love, might look like.)

I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gives me more motivation than ever to offer you the product of a triple crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.
