All Hands on Deck!

Why Summer 2024 Might be the Best Yet

Dear Friend ,

Happy new year from Lopez Contracting! After a rewarding holiday season filled with warm food, rest, and travel, our team is back with all hands on deck!

As the summer of 2024 looms, we wanted to offer you services which we believe can make this one the best yet! We specialize in highly custom decks, and we’re able to design, source, and construct these extensions to your home with a high degree of integrity to your vision.

Any successful construction will need a design and consultation service to accurately draft and calculate CADs, material take-offs, and a labour estimate. Our design department works closely with our project management to make the vision of your mind’s eye manifest. Our CADs and take-off sheets allow any contractor to plan, manage, coordinate, and execute any project in a well scheduled, practical, sensible, and affordable manner. In this way, design is always the best investment!

Our design service begins with a site visit to your property. Here, our project manager and designer work in tandem to get a detailed measure-up, informed by active consultation with you. After assessing practical approaches and market rates, our designers generate CADs for the plan, elevation, section, and detail view. Once complete, these will be provided to you for your approval, along with any relevant proposals, material take-offs, and labour estimates.

Once the design files and estimates are approved, it’s time for our team to get to work! Our designers, carpenters, fabricators, and finishers utilize their decades of collective experience, working together like different parts of the same machine to build up your dream deck. Like you, we love to watch a whole new realm of your living space come to life with dexterity faster than the speed of thought!

A deck is the transition between your home and the world, it breathes a fresh vitality into your space! Whether constructed on site or prefabricated and installed, our team is skilled at assembling decks with the most practical considerations as to structural integrity, egress, and of course the final look!

No deck is complete without safety hardware. We’re versed in BC Building Code and thrilled to offer fabrication services which allow us to outfit hardware that is as stunning as it is secure. We can offer constructions made of a varying combination of wood, glass, or aluminum. With our wide array of expertise, we’re sure we can design hardware that is the right price, feel, and look.

As we settle into the new year, the thought of summer warms us even in the frosty air. We remain at your service for any residential renovation needs you may have. If you’d like to begin on a deck in time for the summer, we are open for consultation and would love to speak with you further. Email us at info@lopezcontracting.com for a site visit today!

Our Triple Crown Philosophy

Some years ago, I innately understood that a building structure should have three important attributes. First, it should be structurally sound. Second, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Third, it should be attainable or affordable. Ever since, I have strived to make everything I do worthy of this triple crown of excellence.

During a ferry ride to Vancouver, I saw my young son had drawn Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man in my notebook. To my surprise, my son’s sketch led me to discover the historic importance of this idea. This world-famous sketch of a man in a circle, his arms outstretched in two different overlapping poses, has become iconic. A Wikipedia search showed me how Da Vinci was inspired by proportions described by Vitruvius in his ancient treatise of De Architectura.

Vitruvius was arguably the greatest architect in history. His work is the only major surviving publication on architecture from classical antiquity. It was written for Emperor Augustus, made famous in the Bible for his census which brought Jesus’ parents to Bethlehem. Eminent Roman architects such as Vitruvius were skilled in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. As an army engineer himself, Vitruvius had overseen all manner of building and construction for wars and settlements across Europe and North Africa.

The most famous maxim of Vitruvius was that architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas. In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions. (Just imagine what Venus, the goddess of love, might look like.)

I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gives me more motivation than ever to offer you the product of a triple crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.
